May 21st – Crossing the M6 Toll footbridge from Poole Crescent, Brownhills West onto Chasewater is always an odd sensory experience. The cage-like structure is disconcerting and the traffic noise from below, coupled with the visual flicker caused by light through the mesh in one’s peripheral vision disorientates. I always think that if there’s some kind of urban hell out there, it would be contstructed like this. Horrible.

May 13th – the flowering of Vetch – the wildflower so common in meadows, in heath grasslands and verges is one of the signs of summer. There are several varieties in the UK, and the most familiar is the yellow and deep crimson variety that grows flat in lawns, often too low for the lawnmower to cut. As kids, we called this ‘Egg and Bacon’.

This example, spurred on by the recent showers, was proliferating near the bypass bridge at Chasewater Heaths.

April 17th – Today, I explored a lot at Chasewater. After I’d done the Classic Transport Show, I mooched over to the building works. I was quite sad to see that the new culvert in the causeway doesn’t replace the old metal bridge over the creek. 5 million quid in works, and that old dangerous bottleneck will apparently remain. Wonderful. Not.
