July 25th – In New Road, in Shenstone, there are a pair of curious, semi-detached houses. They look World War II era to me; there’s something austere about them. But they also have a very odd feature, that I’ve not seen anywhere else. One house bears the legend ‘Defiance’ and the other ‘Victory’, inlaid in a most striking way. There’s history right there, but I’ve never been able to find out anything about their origins. Anyone know anything?

July 7th – I noticed this plant – a climber of sorts – growing over a hedgerow near Hammerwich. I’d been to Lichfield, and was taking the scenic route back. I don’t recognised the flowers or foliage. It’s quite pretty in an understated way. Anyone got any ideas?
February 26th – It was a day of discarded objects, but this was odd. A single, high quality aluminium crutch, in the scrub on the inaccessible side of the canal near the aqueduct on the Anglesey Branch in Brownhills. I don’t know how it came to be there, or why. It’s vaguely unsettling. One possible explanation is that a miracle was performed here, whilst the participants were walking on water. Yeah, that’ll be it…

January 7th – A little further on, I noticed that there’s a huge stock of trail building materials being stored up in the Hednesford Hills. There’s a large area of hardstanding there, whose purpose I’m unsure of – I think it could once have been a building. The Chase Heritage Trail crosses this square, and for a few months now, piles of ballast, road planings and bales of brushwood have been appearing. These are the classic materials used to build cycle trails – I wonder what the plan is?

July 18th – I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I saw this relatively small crop near Lynn in Raikes Lane, and am at bit at a loss as to what it is. It looks a bit like cabbage, but isn’t leafy enough. Clearly not beet, or mangles, not tall enough. Can anyone put me out of my misery, please? Whatever it is, it’s surely in rude health…
