December 27th – I was out taking photos for the New Year Quiz on the main blog, and I found myself in Engine Lane (no, this isn’t a clue!) as the sun set. The green lane here is nothing but a mud bath, but it was beautiful, all the same. Considering the filth and fury that would once have existed here in the form of mining, it really is hard to imagine the peace of this quiet, almost rural spot ever being disturbed; likewise, the canal between Clayhanger and the Black Cock Bridge. Where I stood, trains once crossed to a huge colliery on the other side of the canal. The air would have been full of smoke, dust and noise; the canal full of narrowboats.

As the sun set on this very, very windy but quiet afternoon, it was hard to visualise the industry that made this community.

How time moves on.

September 28th – Conservationists and birders in particular keep banging on about helium balloons, balloon releases and Chinese lanterns. These are serious issues, and here’s why. At Chasewater, balloons have escaped from somewhere, and been blown into this scrub at the side of the lake, well out of reach. They will gradually deflate, and the remaining material will either be blown off and drop in the lake, or hang there waiting to be collected by birds. Birds will choke on balloon remnants, as will fish. Being synthetic, they won’t biodegrade, and will continue to foul the ecology for years if uncollected. I see lots trapped in this way in country hedgerows and on urban commons and greenspaces.

Balloon releases are sponsored littering. Nothing more, nothing less.

September 26th – Further up the canal at Pelsall Road, I noticed what appeared to be oil on the surface of the canal. I was quite concerned as I approached, but I realised as I got closer that the scum is in fact a mixture of leaf-litter and other seed debris that had fallen onto the surface of the water. There must be physical reasons why it all seems to clump in one place…

January 17th – Enjoying the ride to work today, I took a spin up National Cycle Route 5 from Station Road in Coalpool up to the Butts, in Walsall. This great cycleway runs mostly beside the Ford Brook, today flowing rather impressively. After passing under Walsall and picking up some tributaries on the way, the brook becomes the River Tame. Where the flow dives under Mill Lane, there’s a debris filter installed by the Environment Agency. Both they and the National Rivers Authority, their predecessors, have done much to clean up this formerly massively polluted waterway, not just here, but further south. I don’t know why, but I always find structures like this vaguely intimidating and unsettling. 

August 1st – The canal looks odd at the moment. This phenomena occurs two or three times a year, and people often comment mistakenly believing this film to be pollution of some sort. In this case, it’s fibrous matter shed from nearby plants, but can be anything from airborne pollen to seeds. In areas of high boat traffic, it often gives the water a swirly, stripy appearance.

June 18th – I don’t really want to think about what this valve does…

It opens and closes a drainage culvert from the M6 toll. Dotted along the motorway’s length are drainage settlement lagoons that catch surface water, and allow the pollutants (like road grit, rubber particles and debris) to sediment out before flowing into local streams and drains. In the event of a spill of serious pollutant, this valve would be closed to hopefully prevent the damage from extending to the local hydroecology.  Sadly, the culvert it closes has a tiny capacity, and in a rainstorm would overtop into the lagoon anyway.
