July 24th – Despite the change in the weather, the feline population of North Walsall continues it’s current predilection for sleeping outdoors.
This pair of sleepyheads, clearly related, were dozing in a small front yard in The Butts, enjoying the air.
I loved that the black one never once stirred, and the tortie has fallen asleep with it’s tongue out and is regarding me warily through just the one eye.
Oh, for the life of a cat…
July 22nd – I managed to slip out late afternoon, intending to check out Chasewater, then over to Hints via Burntwood and Wall, then maybe to Hopwas and Whittington and back home, calling in for shopping along the way; sadly the rain came at Wall and I went to the supermarket from there instead.
At Chasewater, though, these two larking labradors fascinated me. They tussled and played on the wakeboard pier and had a great time, clearly the best of pals.
A lovely thing to watch.
July 15th – Another joy of warm summer rides is the overspray from crop sprinklers. Often placed – sometimes I wonder if somewhat mischievously – so they spray into adjoining lanes, cycling through the cold mist is a delight.
Sometimes, it you can’t get caught by one directly, standing downwind can be just as rewarding.
Or maybe, just maybe, if the sun is shining, you can catch a perfect little rainbow…
July 12th – Spotted at the bottom end of Scarborough Road in Pleck, the local sandwich shop has been taken over.
I like places named with humour and a tongue firmly in cheek. Not like the clever-clever names for hairdressers and narrowboats that rely on crap puns, but genuine warm humour.
One of my favourites was a emergency retail glazier that used to exist (and may still do) called Total Board ‘em, and a cafe in Sandwell called Sam ‘n’ Ellas.
I wish Fay and her baps well, and like the idea of good food in a good mood.
Mmmm. Bacon.
July 9th – In a canalside garden next to the aqueduct at Newtown, Brownhills a small black cat was watching me intently.
I don’t think it’s very old. It wasn’t by any means a bruiser, but it did look so very black.
A lovely inquisitive puss that clearly takes their security duties very seriously indeed.
July 5th – I needed a break mid morning to have a think; so I slipped out of work on an errand and headed to Kings Hill Park, where I met this fellow.
This park has it’s share of cheeky grey squirrels, but this one was definitely posing for me. What a little star he is.
He didn’t help me with my train of thought, but he did provide some amusing light relief from it.
July 4th – It was a day of cats. Cats everywhere. Strolling, taking the air. Sleeping, lounging, supervising, watching. These are just a selection of the lovely pusses I met out and about on my commute.
Stripes was lounging under a car in Birchills, and was annoyed because I caught him washing his bum, legs asplay. Ginger was snoozing, half asleep in the shrubs near Catshill Junction, and is a cat I’ve seen many times. The pair of flat out sleepers? The same pair of sleepyheads I saw last week in Scarborough Road, Pleck, presumably waiting for their staff to return home.
Presumably the lack of sun but general still warmth encouraged these lazybones out today. It was wonderful to meet them.
July 2nd – Passing through Leomonsley in Lichfield later in the evening, I note it’s holiday time for the Australian snails who currently have a bit of a beach party going on.
I won’t make any bones about this: The Lichfeldian ‘A-Snailian’ cult is bonkers, childish, utter nonsense and totally, totally brilliant. People regularly take diversions in their routes to see what the snails are up to.

July 1st – This is just wonderful. I spotted it a couple of weeks ago but I couldn’t stop to photograph it. Outside a recently well-renovated house on the A461, a new house sign lovingly and beautifully made in the image of the house.
Just look at the detail in that, the tiles on the roof. Its wonderful.
My compliments to the householder, and huge respect for the craft and skill of whoever created this wonderful curiosity.
June 30th – Spotted near Wednesbury, this lovely black cat that I’m sure a passing witch must have left behind. Prowling the perimeter of it’s territory, it peered at me cautiously before settling down to stare me out through the railings.
